A few days ago I watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Not exactly the sort of film to make essays about, but the artist in me enjoyed it. I fell in love with Penelope Cruz' character, Maria Elena.

Maria Elena was a passionate, artistic genius with violent mood swings and suicidal and murderous tendencies. I'm not anywhere as close as sexy as she is, but the "damaged" kind of person she portrays is very familiar territory for me. I was drawn not because of her vixen-ness, but mostly for her unrestrained, unapologetic, very bipolar nature.

I enjoyed watching her work her canvass. I was amused by the way her insidiousness (supposedly) reflected in her art. I almost applauded at those non-sequitur quarrelfests she had with her ex-husband Juan Antonio. I liked how Juan Antonio referred to her attempted suicide as if it were a regular occurrence.

Very beautiful creature. Scary but beautiful. I love her.
